Naledi Hospice was established in 1989 to meet the needs of those suffering from incurable diseases in Bloemfontein and the greater Mangaung ("Place of the lion") region and includes the St. Nicholas Children's Hospice,established in 1998 in response to the increasing number of children referred to the programmes, especially children infected by HIV and AIDS.

Naledi Hospice and The St. Nicholas Children's Hospice are committed to providing compassionate palliative care to improve the quality of life of people with advanced, progressive, incurable disease; and support to their families and aids orphans, into the bereavement period.
Programmes are aimed at enabling communities to provide this care, with appropriate training support.
